In the heart of our lagoon, the reef has long been our treasure — rich in life, colour, and history. But warming seas and bleaching events have taken a heavy toll. With no institutions to turn to, local coral gardeners began their own quiet experiments — tying fragments with rope, fixing them with nails, and using natural methods to keep coral alive. We at GROW Aitutaki have joined our local coral experts, working side by side to bring life back to our reef.
For many of our children, the first step in helping the reef was learning to swim. Only then could they dive down and begin the careful work of collecting fragments, tying them to ropes, and tending to the growing coral. What began as swimming lessons has become something greater — an education in care and responsibility. Our children are not only learning about ecology but also carrying forward the wisdom of our ancestors, becoming the new caretakers of the ocean.
We are also telling this story through images. Coral Kids are also quietly capturing their journey during dives and community sessions. They reveal resilience, adaptation, and the fragile beauty of coral — but most importantly, they show the determination of our children, whose small hands now help hold up the reef.
The Coral Kids story is born here in Aitutaki, but it speaks to the world. It is a story of survival, of children leading with care, and of hope for the ocean’s future. With your support, we can continue restoring coral, teaching our youth, and sharing their voices far beyond our shores.
As we continue on this journey, we are also connecting with Cook Islands based environmental NGOs. These partnerships allow us to grow in knowledge, share skills, and strengthen the network of people working to protect our ocean. Together, we are building a stronger foundation for conservation that is both local and deeply connected to the wider Pacific.
